Can you believe that 2013 is coming to an end? It really is true, the older you get the faster time goes. I can’t believe it’s time to flip the page to a new year. As the year winds down it’s always fun to reflect on the past events. From a marketing standpoint, 2013 was a huge year for video marketing, as was predicted would be in 2012. I was browsing on Practical Ecommerce and came across this article, 12 Most Shared Video Ads of 2013. I thought it was funny. Here is a preview but go to this article to see them all!
Geico’s Hump Day Commercial – what day is it?!
Kmart’s Ship My Pants – I have shown this video before but it’s to funny not to show again
Santa will be here in just a few short weeks, are you ready to track him online? There is nothing more exciting to kids than knowing that Santa will be making a visit to their house. Make it even more exciting by tracking Santa online. It’s pretty easy to do and there are several websites you can use to track ole Chris Kringle.
1. NORAD - North American Aerospace Defense Command (I have used this one before)
2. Google Santa Tracker – of course Google has their own Santa Tracker. Get a behind the scenes look here!
3. Social Media – NORAD and Google Santa will be active on social media all Christmas Eve. Check out the Facebook page here.
Do you use the app Snapchat? Everyone I know, including myself, uses this little app on a daily basis. I’m actually obsessed with it. It’s amusing to send silly pictures to friends that are only able to be seen for 1-10 seconds, what’s not funny about that? Many don’t realize the creator of this app is a 23 year old man, and many don’t know the other day he turned down a 3 billion dollar cash pay out, according to the Wall Street Journal.
I’m sure your wondering why he would reject such a large offer? To be honest I’m not really sure. I have been keeping up with the story though. Facebook has been wanting to buy Snapchat badly and has been making large offers. I’m thinking a buyout will be happening shortly, by Facebook of course. It must be worth more than 3 billion dollars to 23 year old CEO Evan Spiegel. Snapchat hasn’t yet generated revenue but has the potential to run some gigantic ads. I’m thinking ads are in order by Facebook, is this a money maker or not? Do you think snapchat is worth more than 3 billion dollars?
In one of my college courses, a marketing class I took last Spring, we had to do a huge project. This project was marketing for a real small business in the area. We were to create marketing strategy plans, just as a real marketing firm would do, and work in groups to create the best plan. This project took the entire semester and was compiled of weekly group meetings where we brainstormed ideas to plan our strategy as a group. We were then to present it to the business owner herself, which was nerve wrecking.
The project showed us how difficult and costly it can be to market, especially for a small local business. We didn’t want to put all of our eggs in one basket so we experimented with online marketing, a local exhibit company for trade shows, local radio advertising, newspaper advertising and creative ways to put posters up in local restaurants and bars. Being in a “grown up” marketing position, I look back to that specific project and thought it was so stupid at the time. Now, I realize how important it was and how realistic it was. I always thought it would be different being in that grown up position, but I have realized it’s not! My message of the day? Pay attention to your school projects, you never know what you will learn from them.
I plead guilty to being highly addicted to Instagram. I think I like it better than Facebook, there I said it. Can you relate? I love Instagram because it’s only images, not annoying status updates. I don’t even mind businesses on Instagram because they are showcasing themselves through images, rather than pushy marketing tactics. Whether you manage a business on Instagram or just update your own daily, here are some ways you can increase your likes.
When I saw this infographic I found it very interesting, but not surprising. I notice on my own images that I get more likes on simplistic, light photos. I get a lot of likes for my dog and outdoor scenery pics as well as outfits, #ootd (look familiar?) This Infographic lays out nicely the dos and don’t for Instagram to get you more likes on your images and followers. This article was also interesting, check it out here.
